Citrus Valley Intercommunity Hospital- old version

Citrus Valley Health Partners
Covina, CA

The Citrus Valley Intercommunity Hospital is comprised of several buildings, several of which needed updating to meet current code requirements. Zakian Woo Architects worked closely with hospital administration, staff, facilities, and consultants to evaluate the hospital’s needs; the resulting 12,600 square-foot campus-wide upgrade was a combination of tenant improvements and new construction concentrated in the hospital’s Emergency Room (ER) and new Hybrid Operating Room (HOR).

The ER was doubled in size and enhanced by a new flow system to separate critical and non-critical patients. Custom modular casework and patient headwalls decreased the overall nurse station footprint and made room for an enlarged triage area. Patient wellbeing was improved through the addition of skylights and an interior courtyard that introduced natural light into treatment areas. The campus color palette was inspired by the local citrus trees of Covina.

The Hybrid Operating Room (HOR) required substantial space to merge imaging and surgery services. An existing OR on campus was identified; however, the limitations of a second-floor space in an existing building required meticulous planning. Floor strengthening was undertaken for the added weight of the equipment and to ensure sufficient space to maneuver imaging instruments. A significant structural redesign allowed for ceiling mounted equipment and a new roof-mounted HVAC system. ZWA worked closely with multiple vendors, primarily Siemens, and the project consultants to coordinate and facilitate the integration of complex technology and utility requirements for equipment booms, surgical lights, general lighting and specialized HVAC air distribution systems.
