The optimized headwall became the campus standard, including throughout the Advanced Healthsciences Pavilion.
CSMC Operating Room Suite and Post Anesthesia Care Unit
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
Los Angeles, CA
This 22,000 square-foot project included five Operating Room (OR) Suites, a 34-bed Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and a new Cardio, Thoracic, Transplant & Vascular Surgery Suite within the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s (CSMC) Professional Tower. It also encompassed a 16-bed PACU on the Tower’s 7th floor and support spaces such as a sterile core, toilets and housekeeping as well.
CSMC and Zakian Woo Architects kept patient and provider wellbeing front of mind throughout the process. Three nurses’ stations were relocated to have direct sight and access to each patient. Multiple full-size mock-ups of custom headwalls with a full complement of equipment were constructed to fully explore optimum design and efficiency. ZWA also created mock operating rooms to test various lighting and boom systems.
The work needed to be completed in phases to remain operational during construction, including the identification of 2,000 SF of new space for two displaced Hybrid ORs. ZWA provided planning, full scope architectural services, and a phasing strategy.
