Barlow Respiratory Hospital
Los Angeles, CA

Barlow Respiratory Hospital (BRH) opened in 1902 as a tuberculosis sanatorium on a verdant, 25-acre site with ample open space, considered key to patient health. Today, BRH is a nationally respected acute care in-patient campus, specializing in the treatment and rehabilitation of the critically ill. The hospital’s founding philanthropic vision remains, to provide equal care to all patients regardless of financial circumstances.

Zakian Woo Architects is providing full architectural services for the complete seismic upgrade and renovation of two crucial campus buildings, Medical Services / Administration Support (circa 1981) and Building A (circa 1974). BRH is taking advantage of the modernization to address changes in patient treatment models, technologies and equipment. Ultimately, BRH’s licensed patient capacity will be expanded by 60%, or from 50 beds to 85.

To keep the hospital fully operational during construction, ZWA is also providing a group of make-ready projects. These include basic essential services - Pharmacy, Clinical Lab and Body Holding, the relocation of BRH’s Central Data Room, and a new Utility Building.
