This earthquake restoration affirmed the sanctuary’s integrity, from its structural system to its beloved stained-glass windows.

Sanctuary Reconstruction & Remodel

As a result of earthquake and water damage, Zakian Woo Architects’ completed a major reconstruction/remodel of the United Armenian Congregational Church’s 8,000 square foot sanctuary. Complex engineering solutions and interior architectural changes were required to repair the existing dome and stained-glass windows: a ring of steel at the roofline linking the dome to the building’s steel frame, pre-cast tilt-up concrete walls to integrate the building envelope, and the accommodation of tight tolerances for a new altar platform, pulpit and communion table. Zakian Woo Architects also designed an acoustical canopy as well as custom light fixtures, door hardware and furnishings.
