Linear Accelerator Treatment Facility
West Los Angeles Medical Center, US Department of Veterans Affairs
Los Angeles, CA
Zakian Woo Architects’ Linear Accelerator Treatment Room at the VA’s West Los Angeles Medical Center required the decommission and removal of an existing cyclotron-beam isocentric treatment unit and the installation of a new Varian Trilogy Linear Accelerator plus treatment rooms.
The facility is uniquely formidable with imaging rooms contained within an eight-foot-thick concrete vault. The entry was made less intimidating with a new façade and skylights; calming features in the form of cove lighting and projections emulating an oculus-shaped skylight were added to the two treatment rooms. Bold accent colors were used as a contrast the medical equipment’s neutral palette.
The project also required a high level of site preparation. ZWA designed for and managed the installation of a 10,000-pound, motorized sliding Nelco neutron shielding door lined with steel, lead and borated polyethylene. The project’s expansive mechanical work included the installation of a 7.5-ton roof top chiller.
