UCLA Capital Programs enlisted Zakian Woo Architects to convert four floors of former in-patient wings into a clinical psychiatric research facility. Located within what was UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute (1961), the 43,000 square-foot program for the Semel Institute included exam rooms, interactive conference rooms, approximately 200 research offices, clinical support and the elevator lobbies.
As a companion project, ZWA worked closely with Pickett Design Associates to relocate UCLA’s Adolescent Outpatient Clinic from the Semel Institute Tower to 2,000 SF on the ground floor of the nearby Medical Plaza Building 300. The Clinic serves special outpatient needs in a highly monitored setting; the program included reception with controlled access, various types of meeting space, group and individual lounges, dining areas and office space for the program staff.
Once the relocation was complete, ZWA’s scope shifted to the demolition of an existing 12,000 SF Semel Tower addition in anticipation of a new Medical Office Building, the repair of the remaining brick wall, and the construction of a new retaining wall and landscape to accommodate a 40-foot fire lane between the buildings.
The project was initiated through a National Institute of Health (NIH) grant process and awarded to the University with ZWA’s close coordinated assistance.
