Situated near the heart of Chinatown and the Metro Gold Line station, this project preserved and enhanced the varied and distinctive character of not only the original buildings, but of the adjacent area of Chinatown as well.
Two commercial buildings dating from the early 1920s were converted into a combined 135,000 square foot development with 123 units of 55+ senior housing. The upgrade therefore required extensive foundation updates plus the addition of shear walls at several locations rising up through the building between columns to differing floors. Other improvements included slab strengthening in several areas, tying the 6-story and 10-story structures together, wrapping of specific columns and reinforcing new shaft openings.
The ground floor of The Metro @ Chinatown Lofts features a welcoming and spacious lobby, cafe, public meeting rooms, and 12 live/work duplex units to animate and enrich the commercial streetscape. The lower roof has a terrace for all residents to enjoy.
